The second highest peak in the state of Johor and rising just above one thousand meters, the trek to the peak of Gunung Belumut can be a physically tiring. Located 32 km from the town of Kluang, there are some facilities at the foot of the mountain where there is a stream and campsites. Its relative proximity to Singapore and height makes it an enticing place for trekking. Unfortunately, the hassle and cost of getting the permit is a big turn-off for some.

"Tiger's jaw" rock formation in the middle of the forest (23 May 2000)

The foot of the mountain is a nice place to relax. The trek starts across a forest stream and into the tropical rainforest. During early morning, you may be able to hear the wild gibbons howling and if you are fast enough to catch a glimpse of them swinging through the canopy. The topography is a mixed of up and downhill before hitting a relatively steep ascent. Apart from the forest fauna and flora, the next landmark is the Tiger's Jaw rock formation. It is a big rock with deep longitudinal fissures resting in the middle of the forest. A longer section of steep ascent beckons after the rock formation and the flora starts to change. Giant tropical rainforest trees are soon replaced by thinner shorter trees and saplings clinging onto the side of the mountain. At the end of the steep climb, there is a campsite that is sheltered by shorter trees. There is a small water source a short distance away but the water is slow moving at this altitude. If possible, refrain from collecting water from here due to the slow water flow although it looks quite clear. From here, the summit is about half an hour away. The summit view is unobstructed and offers a good view of the surrounding lower lands.

Last water source from the summit (30 March 2002)

This trek used to be popular with Singaporeans due to its height and relative proximity from Singapore. There are also several campsites at the lower half of the mountain and closer to the summit. However, with the inconvenience and cost of getting a permit and guide, this trek has become much less appealing as there are better options (such as Gunung Ledang) at about the same price. For Singaporeans who wish to try a mountain that is over a thousand meters and close to Singapore, this is still a fine place to go.
